Sage Canyon Elementary is proud to be a part of Colorado's Douglas County School District, where parents are provided the opportunity to choose the educational environment and programming that best meets their child's needs. The mission of Sage Canyon is to foster a supportive and challenging school community that fuels a contagious spark for learning and recognizes students as unique individuals. Here at Sage Canyon, we use a Project Based Learning approach to create a solid foundation of fundamental and higher order thinking skills through structured curriculum that is consistent and aligned throughout the grade levels. Project Based Learning (PBL) is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while working in small collaborative groups. Because project-based learning is filled with active and engaged learning, it inspires students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. Research also indicates that students are more likely to retain the knowledge gained through this approach far more than through traditional textbook-centered learning. In addition, students develop confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work.

Principal's Message

Dear Wranglers,

I hope that this email finds you well as we are beginning to enjoy some nicer weather.  As educators, spring is always a bittersweet time of year. We know we must soon say goodbye to our students, but as we start our final projects, it is impossible not to beam with pride over the growth and progress they have made.

As we reflect upon our year, it is also hard not look forward, and so it is with great enthusiasm that I share the grade level teams for the 2018-19 school year.  As our neighborhood continues to grow, so does our school. We anticipate over 720 students next year and will be adding sections in Kindergarten and 6th Grade. We will have an additional mobile at “Sage Canyon West” and will send out a school map with teacher assignments as we get closer to August.

Class Lists:
Every year at Sage Canyon, the current grade level teachers compile a list of recommendations for students for the next year, based on academic and behavioral needs. Teachers create what they consider to be their ideal class lists as students move forward. The leadership team then reviews each list, assigns a teacher’s name to each of the lists, and grade level classrooms are created.

Teacher Requests:
At Sage Canyon, we do not take specific teacher requests, but rather ask for specific traits that would indicate success for each individual student.  For example, your student may need a teacher who is a skilled reading teacher, can connect with your student around their love of art and who runs a very organized and structured classroom.  Knowing these traits will allow our team to place your child with a teacher who can meet those needs.
I often get asked why I don’t take specific teacher requests.  Requesting teacher traits is so much more important for the fit of your child.  Consider the child I described above and the traits that we now know with which they will excel.  You may have a friend whose child had an amazing experience with a teacher. However, if that teacher would not possess the traits of being an extremely skilled reading teacher or running a very organized classroom, there may be a better fit for your child.

The only exception to this will be if your child’s teacher is moving to the next grade level, and you would like them to stay with this teacher.  Specifically, Mrs. Pepper will be doing a ‘ loop’ with her class and information will be coming to you individually.

I am happy to take teacher trait requests via email at mandy.hill@dcsdk12.org or appointment until May 4th.  At that time, we will begin creating lists, and I will be unable to move students around after lists are created.

Teacher placements for the 2018-19 school year will be emailed and live in Parent Portal the third week of July.

Writing about the next school year is always invigorating.  It’s so exciting to see a school year come to a close and a new one on the horizon.  Thank you for being the kind of school community that is warm, embracing and of which I am so proud to be the leader.

Very sincerely,
Mandy Hill
