WELCOME TO SAGE CANYON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Sage Canyon Elementary is proud to be a part of Colorado's Douglas County School District, where parents are provided the opportunity to choose the educational environment and programming that best meets their child's needs. The mission of Sage Canyon is to foster a supportive and challenging school community that fuels a contagious spark for learning and recognizes students as unique individuals. Here at Sage Canyon, we use a Project Based Learning approach to create a solid foundation of fundamental and higher order thinking skills through structured curriculum that is consistent and aligned throughout the grade levels. Project Based Learning (PBL) is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges, simultaneously developing cross-curriculum skills while working in small collaborative groups. Because project-based learning is filled with active and engaged learning, it inspires students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. Research also indicates that students are more likely to retain the knowledge gained through this approach far more than through traditional textbook-centered learning. In addition, students develop confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work.

Principal's Message

August 17, 2018

Wrangler Families,

Thank you so much for helping our start to the school year be so fantastic.  There is nothing better than seeing children happy at school!

Dismissal-

This week’s dismissal has gone more smoothly.  Thank you to those who have not crowded the front entrance and arranged an alternate greeting spot with your child.  We are going to ask everyone who is not picking up a kindergartener or first grader to begin this process next week. Alternate spots include the grass by the bike racks, the playground, the steps to Wrangler Park or the chicken coop.

Yellow cards were sent home yesterday.  Please display these on your passenger side dashboard so that we can help find your student more quickly.  If you did not get one, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Also, it’s imperative that we do not have dogs on campus at arrival and dismissal.

Lightning Dismissal-

I have not reviewed procedures for lightning dismissal this year because we have been so fortunate with the weather.  However, it looks like some rain could be in the forecast for next week, so please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the procedures for lightning dismissal:

It is critical to our students’ safety to follow a lightning dismissal protocol if lightning is present in the area at the end of our school day.  The guideline we are required to follow is when lightning is within ten miles of the school location. You will receive a ‘no-reply’ email as well as a pre-recorded telephone message to inform you of the lightning dismissal.

If a lightning dismissal is called, the following procedures will occur:

*Bus and daycare van riders will be released as normal.  DCSD Transportation will make a decision if buses cannot travel safely to their destination.  Bus parents will be notified directly from transportation should that be the case.

*If your child is a walker, or you pick them up in the car line, you will have to come inside and proceed to their classroom to sign your students out.  Once lightning has cleared the area, we will release students to walk home as normal. Our 6th grade students who are in the mobile will be waiting for pickup in the gym.

We will call a lightning dismissal as soon as we know that lightning is in the area and close enough that it is unsafe.  As soon as lightning dismissal is called, you can come to school to begin to get your students. During a lightning dismissal, you may park along Autumn Sage in the areas that are signed with no parking from 3:00-4:00.

Sadly, some of you are aware that we experienced the passing of a Wrangler mom this week.  Our hearts are heavy for her family and friends. Should you want to help the family, please follow this link.

Thank you for all you are doing to help your children have an amazing start to their school year. We are excited about all of their upcoming learning opportunities.

Please know that as always, my door is open.

Very sincerely,

Mandy Hill
